THE DIGITAL MAGAZINE AND ARCHIVE OF THE DR. ALI ZOHERY PODCAST

Issue 24 Old Alexandria and Mount Vernon

A Journey into the Home Estate and Legacy of George Washington

This issue follows a historic route from Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, to Mount Vernon, the home and estate of George Washington. The journey connects a colonial port, an eighteenth-century church, a scenic road beside the Potomac River, and one of the most significant historic landscapes in the United States.

Mount Vernon is more than the residence of the first president. Its mansion, rooms, gardens, farms, workshops, tomb, river view, and surviving records reveal family life, hospitality, agriculture, business, leadership, and the labor of enslaved men, women, and children. Together they present a fuller and more responsible understanding of the eighteenth century.

The main lesson of the episode is that national history and personal history meet in physical places. Washington commanded an army and established precedents for the presidency, but he also read letters, kept accounts, experimented with crops, welcomed visitors, worried about finances, and repeatedly longed to return to Mount Vernon.

PAGE 2 OLD ALEXANDRIA AND THE ROAD SOUTH

The Community That Shaped the World of Washington

Port streets worship commerce and the Potomac River

Alexandria was established in 1749 beside the Potomac River. Its location encouraged shipping, trade, transportation, and the growth of a busy waterfront. Merchants, craftspeople, laborers, sailors, free and enslaved people, residents, and travelers all participated in the life of the town. The surviving street plan, brick sidewalks, houses, warehouses, churches, and public buildings allow visitors to read several centuries of history in one walk.

Christ Church is an important link between Alexandria and George Washington. Completed in 1773, it served the Church of England’s Fairfax Parish. Washington purchased a box pew and attended services there when he was in Alexandria. The church reminds us that Washington was not only a distant figure in national history. He worshipped, conducted business, met neighbors, and took part in the life of this community.

Alexandria also has difficult histories. Its prosperity was connected to the broader Atlantic economy and to systems of enslavement. Responsible interpretation therefore looks beyond elegant buildings to the people whose labor sustained homes, businesses, wharves, and households. Streets and marketplaces can reveal as much about the past as a mansion or government chamber.

From Alexandria, the route continues south along the Potomac and the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The changing view from urban streets to wooded river scenery prepares visitors for Mount Vernon. The journey is not simply transportation between two attractions; it is a geographical connection between Washington’s commercial, social, religious, and domestic worlds.

PAGE 3 INSIDE THE MANSION

Home Hospitality and Private Responsibility

Rooms that reveal a public leader as a human being

George Washington began leasing Mount Vernon in 1754 and became its owner in 1761. The original house had been built by his father, Augustine Washington, in 1734. Washington enlarged the structure over time and created the two-and-a-half-story mansion familiar to visitors today. Its broad piazza and commanding view of the Potomac express refinement, confidence, and a deliberate relationship with the landscape.

The New Room was the grandest space in the house. It received guests and displayed Washington’s social standing and taste. The dining areas supported formal meals and conversation, while the household’s hospitality depended on planning, food production, domestic skill, and extensive labor. An elegant table is therefore also evidence of the cooks, servers, gardeners, fishers, farmers, and craftspeople whose work made hospitality possible.

Washington’s study was a private center of reading, writing, recordkeeping, and management. Here he reviewed correspondence, agricultural reports, finances, building plans, and estate affairs. The room illustrates a practical side of leadership: large public responsibilities often rest on disciplined habits, close attention, organized information, and the willingness to study details.

The bedchamber carries a different emotional weight. Washington died at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799, after a brief illness. Martha Washington continued to live on the estate until her death in 1802. She managed household responsibilities, welcomed guests, maintained family and social networks, and supported Washington during years of military and public service. Her role helps restore women to the story of the founding era.

PAGE 4 THE WORKING ESTATE

Farms Gardens Industry and Enslaved Lives

The beauty of Mount Vernon rested on a complex system of labor

By 1799 Mount Vernon encompassed nearly 8,000 acres divided into five farms, together with a gristmill and distillery. Washington experimented with crop rotation, soil improvement, livestock breeding, tools, and agricultural methods. Wheat, corn, and other grains replaced tobacco as major parts of his strategy. The estate was a home, but it was also a large agricultural and commercial enterprise.

The gardens combined beauty with utility. The kitchen garden supplied vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Ornamental spaces communicated order and taste, while the greenhouse protected plants that could not withstand Virginia winters. The barns, kitchens, stables, smokehouses, laundry, workshops, mill, and distillery reveal the daily systems hidden behind the mansion’s polished appearance.

Mount Vernon depended heavily on enslaved labor. Enslaved men, women, and children worked in agriculture, domestic service, carpentry, blacksmithing, cooking, sewing, laundry, fishing, construction, gardening, and many other skilled and demanding occupations. They formed families, maintained religious and cultural practices, resisted bondage, and sought greater control over their lives. Their names and experiences are essential to an honest history of the estate.

Washington’s 1799 will directed that the enslaved people he legally owned should be freed after Martha Washington’s death, but he could not free the people held by the Custis estate through Martha’s first marriage. This distinction divided families and demonstrates the human consequences of slavery. Studying Washington responsibly means recognizing his public achievements while refusing to hide the system that supported his wealth and household.

PAGE 5 LEADERSHIP MEMORY AND THE VISIT

The Potomac Landscape and a Complex Legacy

A place to ask what leadership and citizenship require

Mount Vernon remained central to Washington’s identity through war and public office. He commanded the Continental Army, presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and served as the first president of the United States. Yet after public service he repeatedly returned to Virginia, describing himself not only as a national leader but also as a farmer, landowner, neighbor, husband, and guardian of a household.

The Potomac River helps explain the estate’s meaning. It provided transportation, trade, food, scenery, and a connection with Alexandria, Georgetown, Maryland, and communities beyond. From the piazza, the river creates a sense of distance from political life. The family tomb, where George and Martha Washington are buried, transforms the landscape into a place of memory and reflection.

A thoughtful visit asks more than what Washington achieved. It asks who performed the work that sustained the estate, how enslaved people created families and community, how landscapes display power, and how a nation should remember a founder whose life included both remarkable public service and slaveholding. Responsible history does not erase admiration or criticism; it strengthens both through evidence and context.

Questions for discussion include these. Which room or landscape feature would you most like to visit? What can Washington’s study teach about leadership? How did the Potomac shape the estate? Why must the stories of enslaved people remain central? How should museums present complicated figures? What place from your own community connects personal memory with national history?
